GIS-Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) What is GIS? Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are tools used to combine mapping with databases, which in turn allow people to make educated, precise and efficient decisions. "GIS combines layers of nformation about a place to give you a better understanding of that place." (The Environmental Systems Research Institute Inc. / ESRI). The layers of information you combine depends on your purpose. For example, GIS can be used to develop the most efficient and effective snow routes, to analyze potential land-use or even to identify crime patterns. Where do we get the information? The City of Hudson's GIS uses layers obtained from a number of sources such as Summit County, FEMA, the US Census and a selection of private vendors. Data types range from property values to designated wetland areas. Other layers are created internally such as the City's land-use layers, and potential development areas. How is GIS used in the City of Hudson? These tools are currently used throughout the City of Hudson to provide staff members with the ability to view any portion of the City, including specific addresses and locations. If a resident calls to express a concern, City staff are now able to use the GIS to quickly zoom to the location via an aerial photo. Access to this type of information provides staff with a greater understanding of resident concerns. The parcel lines on my property do not appear to be correct--What should I do? In certain areas of the City this may occur. It may appear that property lines may appear to extend over to an adjacent property. Although the City of Hudson does not maintain the Parcel lines (they are maintained by the Summit County Fiscal Office), we can assist you in finding the cause.
