As appeared in Hudson Life Magazine, February 2010 Issue

This month will mark the inauguration of the “YDC Utilization Ad Hoc Committee.” What an exciting time to live in Hudson as the future use of this magnificent piece of property (429 acres) unfolds. The decision of Hudson City Council in 2009, to take advantage of the special pricing offered by Cuyahoga County to purchase the property, will benefit Hudson today and for many, many generation to come, perhaps that is why some are already referring to the property as “Hudson Legacy Park.” Whether that will be the future name of the current YDC property or not is yet to be determined. What ever the future title, the benefit to Hudson and the region will be substantial. I bid all of the members of the “YDC Utilization Ad Hoc Committee” good luck in all of their deliberations and a special thank you for serving on this important committee.

Another thing to look forward to this year will be the continued progress of the “Regional Prosperity Initiative” (RPI) of the Northeast Ohio Mayors and City Managers Association (NEOM&CMA). This is an NEO driven effort started back in early 2007 to plan, share, and grow…together. By more wisely utiliziting our regional resources and participating in region wide planning for new or improved infrastructure and smart land use planning, Northeast Ohio communities will be able to reduce the obstacles obstructing our attainment of a brighter and stronger economic future. As the saying goes…”We are the only thing holding us back.” The initiative is based on collaborative regional smart land use and infrastructure planning coupled with a slice of new growth commercial/industrial tax base sharing. By planning, on a regional wide bases, our region will be able to be more effective and efficient, thereby reducing future costs. Those savings can be passed back to the tax payers plus help reduce the barriers to enhanced, smart job growth through beneficial 21st century economic development.

As the PD article said on January 1st; “We have entered the decade of the Super Region. American cities are joining within their larger metropolitan areas to form huge economic, social and urban systems. And it doesn’t matter whether you live in Chagrin Falls or Parma Heights, Bay Village or North Canton, many economists and policy-makers agree that your future largely rides on the success and failures of Northeast Ohio as a whole over the next 10 years.” I project that we must economically function for the next 10 years and beyond as a mega region if we are going to protect and sustain our individual cities, villages, and townships. If we are going to assure that our beloved Hudson continues to thrive for generations to come, I believe we must embrace this concept.

As Chairman of the NEOM&CMA, I recently testified before the Ohio commission on Local Government Reform and Collaboration concerning the NEO Regional Prosperity Initiative (my entire testimony can be found at www.neo-rpi.org). Please go on-line and read all of the background information about the Regional Prosperity Initiative, then register to get progress up-dates and participate in the informative “Webinars” that are regularly scheduled. While there is some willful misrepresentation occurring concerning the reasons and direction of this most important initiative, you can correctly inform yourself by staying up-to-date on the RPI’s website. As we know: “Change always has enemies” (JFK). Let us all work together to protect and perpetuate Hudson forever, along with doing our part in the revitalization of all of Northeast Ohio! A Strong Northeast Ohio means a Strong Hudson…become part of the “Solution to Assure Our Future!”
