It’s back-to-school time, which means drivers need to be aware of children who will be walking, biking, and riding the bus to and from school. Western Reserve Academy students return today; Hudson City Schools start Wednesday; Seton Catholic starts next Wednesday, August 24; and Hudson Montessori follows on Wednesday, August 31.
Follow these safety reminders to help ensure the safety of children this school year:
It is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children. When the stop sign on the bus is extended, stay 10 feet back and wait for the sign to retract and the bus to start moving before proceeding.
Watch for children, especially near bus stops. They can rush into the street or dash between parked vehicles without warning.
Don’t block the crosswalk with your vehicle when you approach the intersection.
Look for crossing guards stationed at three intersections along North Hayden Parkway: SR 303, Simon Road, and Victoria Parkway, plus SR 303 and Oviatt Street. Always stop for the crossing guard holding up a stop sign.
Slow down, particularly in school zones. Allow extra time to get to where you’re going.
Look for children riding bicycles. When passing a bicyclist moving in the same direction, slow down and give the bicyclist at least 3 feet of room to maneuver.
