[ARCHIVED] HFD Kicks Off Fire Prevention Week with Open House Oct. 9

fire

The Hudson Fire Department will kick off National Fire Prevention Week (October 9 through October 15) with its annual Fire Safety Open House, October 9, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hudson Safety Center on Oviatt Street. Bring the entire family out for a day of fun, festivities and refreshments and experience fire prevention up close.

This year’s event will not only focus on fire safety, but also on all types of safety, from dealing with stormy weather, to electrical safety and how to be notified in an emergency. Some of the highlights will include:

-The newly renovated fire safety trailer that teaches children fire safety and tornado safety in an interactive way through simulated events.

-WKYC Meteorologist Michael Estime will bring the Weather Advance Mobile unit to talk about safety during severe weather.

-Tour the fire station and hop inside a fire truck. Learn to use fire equipment, maneuver a real fire hose, and see up close what it’s like to be a firefighter.

-Watch firefighters use the Jaws of Life for extrication of victims or penetrate concrete with the Controlled Impact Tool used to create holes in concrete safely.

-Learn about electrical safety with Hudson Public Power’s Electrical Safety House, illustrating the common electric safety issues in the home.

-Have an escape plan or emergency plan for fires, tornadoes or other safety concerns? Learn more about how to be prepared in an emergency, and how to sign up for important notifications when an emergency occurs.

-And, with the time change scheduled for November 6, learn about the importance of changing the batteries in your smoke detector when you turn back your clocks.

Now’s the perfect chance to learn how to be prepared while having fun at this year’s Open House.
