Did you know that leaving your pet’s waste on the ground can contribute to water pollution? Pet waste can be picked up and carried by rainwater into storm drains, lakes, and streams. A day’s waste from one large dog can contain 7.8 billion fecal coliform bacteria. How can you help prevent pollution of water?
- Carry bags with you when you walk your dog and pick up any waste.
- Tie the bag and make sure it ends up in a trash can. Do not leave the bag on the ground.
- Don’t forget to pick up after your dog in public spaces, like our parks.

Be especially vigilant of picking up pet waste during the winter because when snow melts, the waste is washed into ponds, storm drains, creeks, and other water sources.
