You may be wondering how the City decides which routes need salt during a winter weather event. In 2016, the City implemented a new salting program where City crews plow and salt the primary streets, hills, intersections and curves, and only plow the snow on secondary streets and cul-de-sacs. The City salts secondary streets only when ice is present.
Why is this method of using less salt important?
- It results in less chemicals being introduced into the runoff that feeds into lakes and streams, reducing the impact of salt on the environment.
- It results in less freezing and thawing of the roads, which minimizes road damage.
The City's goal is always to provide for safe travel for motorists throughout Hudson. Using less salt has not changed this goal. We also need YOUR help to keep our roadways safe! Follow these winter traveling tips to ensure the safety of you and everyone on the roads, including snow plow drivers.
