Area L Smoke Testing Begins September 4

Smoke Test Area L

The Environmental Design Group and C&K Industrial Inc., on behalf of the Summit County Department of Sanitary Sewer Service (DOSSS), will be conducting a smoke testing investigation of the sanitary sewer during the next several months near East Streetsboro Street between East Main Street and Hayden Parkway, South Oviatt Street, and a portion of Ravenna Street. See the full map of the smoke testing area here. Testing is expected to begin Tuesday, September 4.

An important task of the testing will be to locate breaks and defects in the sewer system. The smoke will also reveal sources of where storm and other surface water enter the sewer system. The information gained from this testing will be used to improve the sewer services and may reduce the eventual cost to utility customers.

Homes that will be affected will receive a letter and door hanger prior to the work with instructions. See the map below for the general testing area.

The testing procedure introduces smoke into the underground sewer main while workers monitor above ground for visual indications of smoke. The appearance of smoke above ground can indicate a sewer defect, leak, or clean water connection to the sewer system. During the test, you may see smoke emanating from vent stacks on building roofs, gutter downspouts, storm drain catch basins, or from the ground. Do not be alarmed; this is a normal part of the test. The smoke has no odor, is non-toxic, non-staining, does not create a fire hazard, and will dissipate in a few minutes.

If you have any questions, please contact George Sendrey from the Environmental Design Group at 330-375-1390 or Tim Gott from Summit County DOSSS at 330-926-2501. Full project information can be found here.
