Do you have the passion and dedication to do something amazing for the community? Do you have what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter? Fire Chief Jerry Varnes recently announced the Hudson Fire Department will be accepting applications through October 15, 2018 for volunteer/paid on-call firefighter recruits.
As a Hudson firefighter, your commitment is to respond to fire calls whenever available 24 hours a day. The Chief understands that work and life will make you unavailable for some fire calls. However, as a Hudson volunteer firefighter your community is depending on you – day and night. This commitment also includes attending many public safety, education, social and Hudson Fire Department Association (HFDA) events throughout the year.
No prior firefighting training or experience is required. All training and equipment is paid for by the City of Hudson, including becoming a certified State of Ohio volunteer firefighter within the first year of employment. Applicants must have an Ohio driver’s license and pass a physical agility test and a medical examination. Candidates may not have been convicted of a felony and must either live in the City of Hudson, or within an approximately 3.6 mile radius of the Rt. 91 & Rt. 303 intersection or work 32 or more hours per week in Hudson and have permission to leave work to respond to fire calls. If selected to be a volunteer Hudson firefighter, there is a probationary period of one year.
Each year, Hudson firefighters are required to attend at least 33 percent of fire department “All Calls”. That is approximately 80 calls out of our average of 240 calls a year. Many of our firefighters respond to over 60 percent of our fire calls. All members are required to attend a minimum of 36 hours of in-house training yearly, which generally takes place on Monday evenings or Wednesday mornings.
It takes dedication, sacrifice, strength, and courage, but helping save lives and keeping our community safe is a great reward. If you are ready to serve your community in an important, fulfilling way, or if you are interested in learning more, call the Hudson Fire Department at 330-342-1860 or stop by to pick up an application. Take some time and consider joining our incredible Hudson Fire Department family!
The Hudson Fire Department is composed of 33 volunteer (paid on-call firefighters), 2 part-time staff members, and 5 full-time firefighters on staff.
