From the Summit County Sheriff's Office: We are warning everyone - but especially the elderly - of a new twist on an old scam. Criminals are contacting senior citizens and identifying themselves as Sheriff's deputies. They tell the victim that there is a warrant out for their arrest and frighten them into buying Google Gift Cards in lieu of being arrested.
According to our Detective Bureau, this scam is being perpetrated in every city, village, and township in Summit County, and has already claimed numerous victims.
BE ADVISED THAT NEITHER THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE NOR ANY POLICE DEPARTMENT will instruct anyone to buy Google (or any other type) of gift cards to pay off warrants. THIS IS A SCAM. DON'T FALL FOR IT.
Should you be contacted by anyone claiming to be from the Sheriff's Office, we advise that you immediately call our Dispatch Center (330-643-2181). Our staff will verify whether the call is legitimate or a part of this scam.
