Have an Environmentally Friendly Holiday Season

Merry Mulch

While celebrating the holiday season at Hudson’s many restaurants and shops, it’s also a great time to do small things to be environmentally friendly.

Holiday Parties

Avoid disposable tablecloths, plastic silverware and cups, decorations, serving bowls, and other disposable items. They can’t be recycled.

Consider serving beverages from recyclable cans or glass bottles. Provide recycle bins for your guests.

Merry Mulch Program

Use the City’s free Christmas tree recycling program. Trees must be placed on your tree lawn by January 12 for the first round of pickups, and by January 26 for the second round. Trees placed after January 26 must be removed by your trash hauler.

Trees should be free of wires, decorations, tree stands, plastic bags/wrap and ornaments. For more information about the Merry Mulch Program, visit

Salting Walks & Driveways

Residents are required to keep their sidewalks free of ice and snow. If you use salt, spread it sparingly. Most driveway salt works only above 15° F. For colder temperatures, use sand or an ice-melting product. Magnesium chloride is a new deicing salt that works to –13° F and releases 40% less chloride into the environment.

Salt works best when applied before it snows or after it is plowed. Don’t use when rain is forecasted. Salt runoff severely affects the environment. For more information, visit Summit Soil & Water Conservation District at
