Executive Session

Council entered executive session to consider applicants for the Park Board & Tree Commission.

Correspondence, Council Comments, City Manager Comments

  • Ward 3 Open Forum. Attendees brought up topics including the proposed townhomes, dog park, connectivity, construction on North and South Main and stormwater issues. Council will discuss a possible solution in a future executive session.
  • Letter from Marine Lt. Col. Council read a letter from a Lt. Col. in the Marines about the American Legion issue and how important it is to unify our community.
  • DEI proposal. Several letters were read that were against spending taxpayer dollars on DEI or critical race theory.
  • Environmental Awareness Committee. The Committee is working on a recycling education grant. The Green on the Green event will be held September 4 as part of the Labor Day festivities.
  • Meeting with Governor DeWine. The Mayor, along with other city mayors, met with Governor DeWine and discussed 1) Expansion of Broadband, 2) Police Reform, 3) Sewer and Water Accessibility, and 4) Tax refunds to residents on income tax paid by employers into the community where they resided. They also discussed the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.

Discussion Items

  • AMP Presentation. American Municipal Power representatives presented a brief history of the AMP organization and its relationship with the City of Hudson. AMP staff provided information regarding the Prairie State Energy Campus. Council asked questions about the future of Prairie State and expressed its concerns about the outstanding debt liability that the City would hold should the plant be shut down prior to the term of the debt. Council asked staff to come back with strategies for what to do should this occur, a possible exit strategy from Prairie State, and how it would impact the City financially.
  • Community Dialogue Proposal. Council discussed a proposal to hire a consultant to encourage dialogue to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. Some members of Council questioned using taxpayer dollars for this effort, while others expressed the need to take first steps toward having these difficult discussions. Legislation will appear on next week’s Council meeting agenda for the standard three readings.
