Holiday Lights Recycling Drive is a Roaring Success

Holiday Lights Recycling Drive Results

Hudson residents donated 800 pounds of broken or used holiday lights to be recycled, with the proceeds going to support the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s lion and cheetah conservation program in Tanzania.

The Environmental Awareness Committee (EAC), which organized the recycling drive, and the City were amazed at the response of residents to the program, which may become an annual event.

The Hudson EAC would like to thank the merchants and organizations that had collection bins: ACE Hardware, Destination Hudson, Vertical Runner, The Learned Owl, Ohio Organics, and Splott Graphics.

It would also like to thank the City’s Public Works Department, which stored boxes and bags of donated lights until they could be taken by two EAC members to the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District facility in Garfield Heights on January 11. The lights filled two large cardboard storage boxes on wooden pallets at the facility, which gathered the lights for the zoo.

In partnership with Ruaha Carnivore Project and Lion Landscapes, the Zoo is working to develop effective, long-term conservation strategies for large carnivores in Tanzania.  This organization also helps provide important conservation-related benefits to local communities.
