City Council Highlights Logo

Following is a summary of Tuesday night’s City Council Meeting. To watch the meeting, visit www.hudson.oh.us/WatchMeetings

Executive Session

  • Council entered executive session to discuss the employment of a public employee.

Proclamation

  • Special Recognition of Alyssa Dennis for her contributions to Friends of Hudson Parks, the Hudson community, and its residents.

Public Comments

  • None.

Correspondence and Council Comments

  • The Mayor clarified procedure for Council Comments/Correspondence.
  • The Pack the Pond at Hudson Springs Park was canceled and rescheduled for Thursday from 5 pm to 8 pm.
  • Council members sought to clarify misinformation appearing in the local newspapers and on social media regarding Legislation 22-79. It passed by a vote of 5-1, not 4-2 as was printed in a magazine and the local newspaper, as well as misinformation about the amended version that was passed by Council. There is a mechanism for passing emergency legislation. Also, every member of Council can forward a topic for the agenda through a discussion at a workshop. Council also provided background information on the history that led up to this legislation.
  • Tree Commission Update. Hudson Garden Club used to take care of downtown flowers. Currently, they don’t have the volunteers to continue, so our City arborist has taken over. The Hudson Tree Commission has been using volunteers to help. More volunteers are needed, so contact the Tree Commission if you want to help water the flowers and help with clean up. A Council member thanked Hudson High School student Noah Batcher for his volunteer work with helping with cleaning and watering flowers in the downtown. The City Arborist has been working on storm cleanup since the June storm, which has set him back a month. He hopes to get caught up by the end of August.
  • The Environmental Awareness Committee (EAC) would like to put out a survey on Let’s Talk Hudson to ask citizens about their interest in composting and a home pickup composting services or a composting drop off location. Council asked the EAC to provide Council with the questions it wants to ask. The EAC is beginning to plan Earth Week 2023
  • The City’s Annual Touch a Truck is Wednesday and the Farmer’s Market Mini Makers Mart is this Saturday from 9 am to 12:30 pm, with a number of young entrepreneurs sharing the green with vendors. The Mayor met with the Mayor of Streetsboro to discuss flooding issues in the Stone Road area. Staff will internally review the information to help determine what the cities can do together to help mitigate the problem.
  • Council also thanked the planners and organizers of the HUDSONmART which was a success last weekend.

Report of Interim City Manager

  • There will be a City Hall Open House on Saturday, September 10 from 9 am to noon. Tours of the building and refreshments will be provided.

Appointments

  • Council appointed Chris Banweg, Skylar Sutton, and Karen Heater to the Ad Hoc Fiber to the Home Committee.

Consent Agenda

Council passed the following Consent Agenda items. Passed 7-0.

  • Resolution authorizing to enter an agreement with the Metro Regional Transit Authority for the conversion of an existing railway line between Barlow Road and Seasons Road into a recreational high and bike trail.
  • Resolution affirming the application for up to $106,445.45 in American Rescue Plan Act First Responder wellness, recruitment, retention, and resiliency funding.

Legislation

  • Ordinance Creating Chapter 296 of the Codified Ordinances to prohibit individual City employees from serving on City Boards, Commissions, and Committees. First Reading.
  • Resolution authorizing the City manager to enter into lease agreements and establish rules for the use of space at City Hall and/or on other City property. First Reading.
